Getting to Tuscany:

There are several options to arrive at the conference site depending upon flight availability from the departure airport. Please use the map for reference:

  • You can fly from most major European airports directly to airports in Pisa or Florence.
  • If you are traveling from the U.S., you can also fly into one of the European gateway cities/hubs (e.g. London, Paris, etc.) and make the appropriate connections to Pisa or Florence, as these airports are located in Tuscany.
  • Lastly, you can also fly into Rome Fiumicino Airport, which is slightly farther.

If landing in Florence take the bus or taxi to Florence railway central station (Santa Maria Novella) and then 1.5 hrs train to Siena (direct or change in Empoli)

Expect a bit more than 2 hours to reach Siena from Pisa Airport by Train (changing twice in Pisa Centrale and in Empoli) and 4 hours from Rome Fiumicino Airport (changing twice at Roma Termini and Chiusi-Chianciano Terme or Grosseto).

If landing in Fiumicino, you can either rent a car and drive to Borgo San Luigi or travel via high speed train to Florence.

If you decide to rent a car, it is a legal requirement to obtain an International Driver’s License or Permit (IDL/IDP) even though the car rental company may not ask for it, but you are required to present it when stopped by law enforcement. For US Citizens, the advice from US Embassy is to acquire the permit prior to your travel. Tips: you can obtain an IDP at the local AAA office.
